David Bowie ‘Bombers’

Everyone’s gone Bowie-birthday bonkers today. Hell, I somehow managed to embarrass myself by arguing semantics with The Quietus on Twitter over their ‘Bowie birthday rarities’ article; turns out they’re hyping album tracks, whereas I was expecting bootlegs and the like. No bad thing - I now know I should give Young Americans and Diamond Dogs another go today - but this is probably the perfect track of the Dame’s to play in 2012: a Hunky Dory-era paean to impending nuclear doom, one of his most playful songs, glossed with a grimly funny lyric. Think Dr. Strangelove in drag.

“A-bombs! H-bombs! Even very small ones
Ripped apart that sand
‘til the stench was just revolting
And the sky a greenish tan…”
